Some Consequences of the Doctrine of the Assumption

A century ago it was well-known
That all was well, was well, was very well;
That all that now was hidden would be shown;
That we would, building heaven, banish hell

For Man (and men it was) stood up to night
And reasoned that his reason so would wake
To flood its gloom with new-created light;
To fill the earth with all that he would make.

Entrenching tools turned acres into tombs.
Beware him who forgets what he assumes.
